The Unwanted Witness (UW) News Brief: Uganda government is planning to introduce a new law to control the use of Social Media.
Kampala, 6th/Oct/2015; Plans are underway for the government of Uganda to introduce a new law to control the use of social media according to the State Minister for Internal Affairs, James Baba.
In an exclusive interview with the Unwanted Witness, Minister Baba was reluctant to divulge details of what the new law would cover, “No I can not share much, why don’t you wait for me to finish and I get back to you.” Said Minister Baba.
However, ministry of internal affairs publicity, Pamela Ankunda revealed that the process of having the regulation in place is on course. “The minister hinted on the bill and it should be on cabinet’s order paper now,” Ankunda confirmed and promised to share more details.
Once endorsed, the social media regulation bill will be added to a list of already existing cyber laws such as the computer misuse act, the anti-pornographic law and the regulations of interception of communications act which all focus on narrowing the online expression space.
